A mayor from West Virginia has resigned amid a furor over a racist Facebook post that described First Lady Michelle Obama as an “ape in heels,” US media said.
Beverly Whaling, the mayor of the tiny town of Clay, had appeared to applaud the incendiary comment and stepped down Tuesday amid the ensuing firestorm.
Local television news channel WSAZ confirmed that Whaling had resigned.
According to WSAZ, Clay County Development Corp. director Pamela Ramsey Taylor had posted after Donald Trump’s election: “It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a Ape in heels.”
Whaling responded: “Just made my day Pam.”
The comments were later deleted and both women’s Facebook pages were eventually taken offline, The Washington Post reported citing local media.
Staffers at the Clay County Development Corp. told WSAZ that Taylor had been removed from her position.
Barack Obama’s eight years in office have been marred by racial slurs against the nation’s first African American president and his family.
Clay has a population of less than 500, according to the 2010 census, and is the seat of Clay County in West Virginia.
The furor over the racist comment, and the mayor’s seemingly agreeable response, prompted an online petition drive to have the two women ousted.
The text on www.thepetitionsite.com gathered nearly 160,000 signatures from across the country.
Whaling had apologized in a statement Monday to The Washington Post, writing: “My comment was not intended to be racist at all.”
Michelle Obama emerged as a hugely popular surrogate for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail.
Trump, a billionaire businessman, won West Virginia’s five electoral votes, helping him to his unexpected triumph over Clinton.

Over the course of the Obama Presidency, and during this U.S. Presidential election cycle, we have seen the rise of a population of white racist fanatics that includes a league of American white supremacist's who call themselves the "Alt-Right."
With the rise of Donald Trump, as a racial demagogue, and champion of their backward cause, this league of ideologically-driven racial hate groups, and their mindless minions, have become more bold, more bitter, and more violent, with each passing week. This former fringe movement, which has now taken center stage in the Republican Party, has also sparked a massive rejuvenation of the Ku Klux Klan, and the formal unification of white supremacist organizations, throwing their support, along with the Fraternal Order of Police, behind Donald Trump's Presidential candidacy. Their public, and too often violent, support of Donald Trump's falsehood-ridden campaign suggests that the people in the Alt-Right movement have lost their perspective on reality...if they ever actually had one. This is unfortunate. Also unfortunate is their cult loyalty to Donald Trump.
American White supremacists, also known as white nationalists, are now openly threatening to attack Black Americans if Donald Trump loses this Presidential election. This sentiment is exemplified by a Donald Trump supporter and suspected white supremacist from Greenville, South Carolina named Jim Moseley, who recently posted threats against Black citizens on his Facebook page.
“Liberals will have targets on their backs, as their behaviors are pretty much evident. Race wars will begin as well, as your skin color will be your uniform!”
This threat is apparently an attempt to frighten Black People, especially Black Women, into voting for Trump or into staying home and not voting at all. If Donald Trump loses this election (and indications in the polls suggest that he will), the white supremacists who are threatening to attack Black Americans would be well-advised to think twice about attacking us; for GOD IS WITH US. Attacking us would not be a very wise move because the spirit of Nat Turner has been awakened in this Generation of Black Americans.
Black Americans are the Survivors of American Chattel Slavery. Chattel Slavery was a system of forced labor, and bondage, in which People of African Descent in America were classified as Animal Property by European Americans, and by the Government, in order to facilitate the accumulation of White Wealth from unpaid Black Labor. The white slave owner exercised absolute authority over the poor Chattel Slave's life, liberty, labor, and offspring. America's captive laborers were callously subjected to physical--and mental--trauma, and gross sexual abuse, as an everyday norm. It was not always this way in America. Beginning in 1619, Africans were brought to the British Colony of Jamestown, Virginia. The first Africans were Indentured Servants, much like the poor laborers from Europe. But through treachery, greed, violence, and unjust legal manipulation, the Africans in America were reduced to Chattel Slaves by the end of the 17th century.
The Europeans in the American Colonies over-committed their economy, culture, and society, to Chattel Slavery, and invented "whiteness" and racism to facilitate the process. It is now admitted by some Historians that the American Colonies actually declared their independence from Britain in 1776 in order to protect the institution of Chattel Slavery.
By 1808, the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was virtually shut down; and, the American economy could no longer depend on enslaving captives who were brought to America from Africa on slave ships. So, white plantation owners began to breed Black People like animals, even going as far as to keep pedigrees for animal husbandry purposes. In order to facilitate this abomination with a clear conscience, some whites denied their Black captives the rite, and the right, of Christian Baptism. This was spiritually traumatic to the captives, especially to the females. For, as far as they knew, being denied Christian Baptism meant that the sexual sins that they were compelled to commit were not forgiven by God. Contrary to traditional stereotypes about the sexuality of "slave women" in America, our captive female Ancestors valued their chastity. This is borne out in the Slave Narratives. Southampton, Virginia was one such area where slave-breeding was prevalent. There, a brilliant slave preacher, and family Ancestor of mine, named Nat Turner, was forbidden by the white slave owners, the local government, and their Church, to Baptize the captives.
On August 21, 1831, in Southampton, Virginia, Nat Turner, a plantation preacher, and mystic, who was known to the captive Africans as The Prophet, led the most devastating slave revolt in American History. Turner, inspired by a vision from God, led this revolt in response to the impact of slave-breeding on the captives, especially on the Women and girls. The revolt lasted for three days, in which Nat Turner's Men killed fifty-five whites--men, women, and children--before the insurrection was put down by the U.S. Military and local armed white vigilantes.
Turner himself was not captured until October 30, 1831. He was tried, and hanged on November 11, 1831. Before his execution, Nat Turner gave his confession to a lawyer named Thomas R. Gray on November 5, 1831. In his confession, Nat Turner intimated that the Holy Spirit taught him about the movements of the heavenly bodies. He also prophesied of a battle between Blacks and Whites at the time of a Total Solar Eclipse. Read The Nat Turner Prophecy below:
THE NAT TURNER PROPHECY
"And about this time I had a vision--and I saw white spirits and black spirits engaged in battle, and the sun was darkened--the thunder rolled in the heaven, and blood flowed in the streams--and I heard a voice saying, 'Such is your luck, such you are called to see, and let it come rough or smooth, you must surely bare it.'"
Dictated to William Gray on November 5, 1831.
The Confessions of Nat Turner. Gray, Thomas R. Lucas & Deaver, Print Baltimore: 1831, p. 10.
Ponder the meaning of Nat Turner's Prophecy given in the document below titled, The Cosmic & Qur'anic Mystery of The Nat Turner Revolt. You will understand why The Holy Spirit specifically directed Prophet Nat to rise up and revolt on the date of August 21, 1831, and write a prophecy in the oppressor's blood.
EMPTY TREASURY: I FELT LIKE ABSCONDING WHEN I TOOK OVER FROM JONATHAN – BUHARI
EMPTY TREASURY: I FELT LIKE ABSCONDING WHEN I TOOK OVER FROM JONATHAN – BUHARI
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday admitted that at a point after he was inaugurated as the President in May 2015, he felt like running away.
He said he would have taken the decision because of the myriad of problems his administration inherited from past governments.
Buhari said this while addressing 68 participants of Senior Executive Course 38 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru and the institute’s management staff at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The President said consecutive administrations since 1999 realised unprecedented resources because of the huge price of oil and the number of barrels being produced per day and yet the party in government during the period had nothing to show for it.
He said, “For 16 years and eight consecutive governments of the other party, you know that there was unprecedented revenue realised. Oil production which can be verified was 2.1 million barrels per day.
“Between 1999 and 2015, the average cost of each Nigerian barrel of oil was $100 per barrel. When we came it fell to less $30 per barrel and is now hovering between $40 and $50.
“Actually, I felt like absconding because 27 out of 36 states in Nigeria cannot pay salaries and we know they have no other source than to depend on salaries to pay rent and do other things.
“I asked if there was any savings and I was told there was no savings. I asked what they did on agriculture, power, rails and roads. There was nothing.
“You know more than I do because you move around. I have not been moving around since after elections but you do. How many of the Trunk A roads are still good enough? How much power do we have although there are some elements of sabotage?
“I was told the money was used to import food and fuel. I didn’t believe the answer and I still do not believe it.
“Up till now, a substantial number of people in the East eat garri and groundnut; in the West they eat pounded yam, cassava, vegetables; in the North, they eat tuwo which is made from any of the grains: millet, sorghum. They eat it in the night and warm it in the morning and eat it and take fura in the afternoon. How many of those people can afford foreign food?
“Then they said I should check out the petroleum sector. The legislature dedicated 445,000 barrels per day for internal consumption and that is just 60 per cent of our requirements. I said ‘okay, what of the 40 per cent?’ The marketers that are bringing it just present documents, papers are just stamped and monies are taken away.
“This is the type of things that the Nigerian elites are doing for our own country. When you go back, look at your colleagues and encourage them to be truly Nigerians.”
Buhari insisted that the economic recession currently being witnessed in the country was caused by the mismanagement of the nation’s economy in the past.
“In the last one and half years of this administration, the economy has experienced some tough times, particularly with the decline in oil revenues, which has some harsh impacts on Nigerians at the grassroots.
“It is also important to note that the economic recession is not the making of this administration, but rather a consequence of bad management of the economy in the past couple of decades. Nor is recession limited to Nigeria – there are far, far worse cases than Nigeria,” he added.
Buhari however said regardless of the scale of the problem, the important thing was how one tackles it.
Accordingly, he said his administration was committed to finding lasting solutions to the economic structural imbalance.
He urged Nigerians to have faith that the country would come out of recession vibrant and strong.

Privet! Vladimir Putin grants Russian citizenship to Steven Seagal
eagal. USA TODAY
Privet (or welcome), Comrade Seagal.
The Kremlin announced Thursday that it was awarding Russian citizenship to action-movie star Steven Seagal .
Seagal, 64, already has several Russian visa stamps in his passport from his visits to the country, where he's accompanied Vladimir Putin to martial-arts events. The Russian president, who's two years his junior, has been a practitioner of judo since he was a teenager and has even written a book on the subject.
The Under Siege star, who identifies as Republican and has called for the impeachment of President Obama , has vocally praised Putin, calling him "one of the greatest world leaders" and defending Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea .
In March of that year, he told the state-owned newspaper Rossiskaya Gazeta that western policy on Crimea was "idiotic" and characterized the takeover as Putin acting to "protect the Russian-speaking people of Crimea, his assets, and the Russian Black Sea military base in Sevastopol ."
Twitter | @rusembusa
If Seagal were to accept Russian citizenship, he wouldn't be hurting for expatriate company: French actor Gérard Depardieu went into tax exile there in 2013 and American boxer Roy Jones Jr. made a personal request to Putin for dual citizenship in 2015 in order to ease his frequent business trips there — and got it.
Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Seagal “has been insistent for a long time in asking to be granted Russian citizenship,” adding that “he is known for his warm feelings to our country. He never made a secret of it, and he’s also a well-known actor, which gave grounds to make him a Russian citizen.”
Seagal, who tweeted last month that he was spending most of October there, has yet to comment on his social media accounts and his representatives did not immediately respond to USA TODAY about whether he plans to accept or if he'll claim dual Russian-American citizenship, which could force him to pay taxes to both countries.
Or possibly three countries, in Seagal's case since he was also granted Serbian citizenship in January after offering to establish a martial-arts school in that country's capital of Belgrade.
But on the upside, he might also be eligible to collect a pension in Russia: a cool 5,000 rubles ($78), notes AP Moscow correspondent Nataliya Vasilyeva.
Pope Francis Reaffirms Ban on Women as Priests
About 60 percent of American Catholics think the church should allow women to be ordained.
Pope Francis Reaffirms Ban on Women as Priests
Pope Francis said the ban on women being ordained as priests will likely last forever, according to journalists aboard a flight with the pope Tuesday.
Francis was traveling to Rome from Sweden, where he went to mark the 499th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. While there, he met with Lutheran Archbishop Antje Jackelen of Uppsala, a woman and the primate of the Church of Sweden.
On the plane, a Swedish journalist referenced the archbishop and asked the pope whether women might be able to serve as Catholic priests in coming decades.
"On the ordination of women in the Catholic church, the last word is clear," Francis said, citing Pope John Paul II's 1994 letter banning women from the priesthood. "It was given by St. John Paul II and this remains."
"But really forever?" the journalist asked. "Never?"
He replied: "If we read carefully the declaration made by St. John Paul II, it goes in that direction."
Francis went on to say women do "many other things better than men," emphasizing Jesus Christ's mother Mary and the "feminine dimension of the church."
The pope's statements are likely a relief for traditional Catholics, many of whom have accused him of confusing statements on matters of faith.
Francis' statement reaffirms his 2013declaration that women can never become priests. Some advocates, however, thought the church's resolve might be softening after the pope created a commission in August to study whether women could be ordained as deacons.
Deacons can perform many of the same duties as priests, including preaching at Mass and officiating weddings and baptisms. Though they are currently banned from doing so, women could serve as deacons in the early centuries of the church.
"If women can be ordained as deacons, then this is going to weaken — not destroy — but weaken significantly the argument that women absolutely are incapable of being ordained as priests," Boston College theologian James Bretzke said in May when the pope promised to create the commission. "So this is opening more than a crack in the door."
About 6 in 10 American Catholics think the church should allow women to become priests, according to a 2015 Pew survey. Many Protestant denominations have allowed women to serve as priests and bishops for decades.
